Lumen is exiting voice. Its Teams customers need a home

By Michael Hudlow ·

Operator Connect, Direct Routing, managed SBC and hosted Teams voice services flowing into a service provider's own branded Teams calling

Lumen has stopped selling enterprise voice. Since August 1, 2026, partners can no longer sell or renew Lumen SIP trunking, Voice Complete, or its hosted voice services for Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Existing contracts keep running, then move to month-to-month when they expire. Lumen has not set an end-of-life date or published a migration plan.

For UCaaS providers, the Teams accounts in that base are the easiest ones to win. Here's why, and how to be ready before those contracts come up.

What Lumen announced

Lumen notified its channel partners on July 1 that its voice products would no longer be eligible for new sales or renewals. On its second-quarter earnings call, CFO Chris Stansbury confirmed the end of sale. He said Lumen would meet its obligations to large customers and regulators, but that voice is not part of the company's future.

A few other details matter for anyone selling into this base:

  • No end date. Lumen hasn't said when existing voice service will be switched off.
  • No named migration partner. CEO Kate Johnson said Lumen is developing partnerships with voice providers but hasn't named any.
  • A thinner channel team. Lumen cut roughly 90 people from its partner organization, including channel managers that agents relied on.
  • No compensation on voice renewals. Agents have been told that voice renewals won't earn commissions going forward.

The market noticed. Coeo Solutions CRO Jim Glackin called it "the single largest land grab in the history of my career."

Why the Teams accounts move first

End of sale is not end of life. Nothing breaks for a Lumen customer today. But every contract now has an expiration date that doubles as a decision date. When it arrives, the customer starts taking calls.

Teams customers are the simplest to move, because so little changes for them:

  • The Teams client, the Microsoft licenses and the way users make and take calls all stay the same.
  • What changes is the voice service behind Teams Phone.
  • For users, the switch is a number port and a configuration change, not a retraining project.

Lumen sold Teams calling through Direct Routing and Operator Connect, often with Lumen managing the SBCs. These customers are used to someone else running the infrastructure, and they'll expect the same from whoever replaces Lumen.

Many of these accounts are also smaller than Lumen wants. Johnson has said Lumen has a large number of customers with low monthly spend and no other Lumen services. Those are exactly the small and midmarket businesses UCaaS providers are built to serve.

The catch: most providers can't sell Teams voice the way Lumen did

Lumen had Operator Connect status and its own SBC infrastructure. A typical UCaaS provider has two ways to match that, and neither one is quick.

  • Operator Connect means Microsoft's certification program: technical, security, service and compliance reviews, then a partner agreement.
  • Do-it-yourself Direct Routing means building and running Teams-certified SBCs, public IPs, DNS, FQDNs, SSL certificates and PowerShell scripts for every customer.

That's a long road when a customer's Lumen contract expires next quarter.

How TeamMate gets you there

TeamMate is a white-label platform that lets you offer every route to Teams under your own brand, on your own network and numbers. For a Lumen Teams customer, the mapping is direct:

What the Lumen customer had What you can offer with TeamMate
Operator Connect calling Operator Connect Express: the same provisioning in the Teams Admin Center, with your DIDs, and no Microsoft certification
Direct Routing with Lumen-managed SBCs SIP Trunk Connector: automated Direct Routing, with SBCs included in 9 Azure regions
Teams users who need PBX features like hunt groups, queues or call center PBX Connector: each Teams user registers as a real extension on your PBX
A mix of the above Combine PBX, SIP trunk and Operator Connect Express users in one Teams tenant

You also don't have to stop at dial tone. Lumen sold voice as a carrier. You can move the same customer onto a fuller service, adding SMS Connector for business texting in Teams, Teams Call Recording for compliance, or AI Voice Agents to answer and route calls. A replacement becomes an upgrade.

A playbook for the next 90 days

1. Find the accounts. Ask your agents and technology advisors which of their customers run Teams calling on Lumen, and sort those accounts by contract end date. Anything renewing in the next two or three quarters comes first.

2. Give the channel a home. Advisors holding a Lumen voice book lost their renewal commissions and their Lumen channel contacts at the same time. A provider that offers them recurring revenue and real migration help becomes the obvious place to take that book. See our partner program.

3. Lead with "nothing changes for your users." The pitch to the customer is simple: same Teams, same numbers, a voice provider that's committed to voice.

4. Start the port early. Number porting is usually the step that takes longest. Work back from the contract end date, and leave room for a parallel run before cutover.

5. Prove it on your own numbers. Stand up a Teams customer on your network before the first renewal lands, so your team has done it once before it counts.

Move before the renewal notice does

Lumen's Teams customers will choose a new provider when their contracts expire, whether anyone calls them or not. The providers who win them will already have a Teams offer ready, a migration plan and the channel on their side.
